SOUTH CAPE YORK CATCHMENTS

South Cape York Catchments is an organisation dedicated to protecting and promoting the natural and cultural environment of southern Cape York Peninsula. With a vision of working together to care for our local environment, culture, and community, we strive to address the disadvantages faced by the people living in the region. Our mission involves implementing programs that not only enhance the well-being of the local population but also safeguard the unique natural and cultural heritage of the area.

What sets South Cape York Catchments apart is our commitment to inclusivity and our work to empower Traditional Owners, young people, and volunteers. Our organisation prioritises supporting Indigenous land management in our region, and in line with this, we support Traditional Owners to work on their own land. By doing so, we not only ensure that the voices and perspectives of the traditional custodians are heard, but also create opportunities for employment, economic growth, and cultural preservation within our local community. Through our collaborative efforts, South Cape York Catchments strives to overcome challenges and create a sustainable future for the region and its people.

What We Do

South Cape York Catchments (SCYC) is a not-for-profit community based Natural & Cultural Resource Management organisation, with 24 years of experience delivering projects across Cape York. We work in partnership with Traditional Owners, volunteers, Indigenous Rangers, and young people to create meaningful employment, training, and youth engagement opportunities. We host three Indigenous Ranger Programs and provide ad-hoc support to many others, host up to twelve community events each year, and manage projects that support community and landholders to engage in improved land management activities. Together, we undertake works including fire management, weed control, cultural heritage protection, ecosystem monitoring, feral animal management, water quality monitoring, erosion control, community beach clean-ups, and threatened species surveys.
