Cooktown and District Country Show

South Cape York Catchments had a great day at the Cooktown and District Country Show screen printing, painting and chatting to locals and tourists about our work and what is important to them about Cape York.  SCYC was joined by Cape York NRM, and it was really interesting to hear the different opinions of locals and travellers.  It was very clear that a healthy environment and clean waterways was of particular importance to locals and travellers alike- which makes our work all the more important!

A great day was had by all, and it was a great opportunity for SCYC to get out and about in the wider community to hear what people have to say.

Cooktown Education and Careers Expo

South Cape York Catchments enjoyed a busy day at the Cooktown Education and Careers Expo talking to kids from Cooktown P-12 and the Endeavour Christian College about jobs in environmental protection and natural resource management.  The SCYC joint stall with Cape York NRM, Landcare and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service was well attended, and the students were very interested in stories of working on Cape York- particularly in anything that involved a helicopter!  It was especially great to see the number of young girls who expressed an interest in studying Environmental Science or wanting to become a ranger.  It was a great opportunity for SCYC to be out in the community, talking to young people about caring for our natural environment.

Darrba Land Trust Project

The Darrba Land Trust and SCYC Caring for Our Country project has now drawn to a close, and was very successful!
Giant Sensitive Plant was sprayed on over 30 hectares of Darrba country, a fire management workshop was well attended, a Natural Values book was produced for the Darrba people and native seedlings were planted to rehabilitate an area of Darrba land.  The Traditional Owners involved were very happy with the end results, and have gained valuable skills which will help them to continue managing their country in the future.
